University of Cape Town UCT Readmissions 2021-2022
An academic standing at the end of the previous academic year of ‘not eligible to continue’ (RENN) means that you are not permitted to renew your registration in the current academic year as you have not met the minimum academic requirements to do so.
An academic standing at the end of the previous academic year of ‘eligible to continue if SUPP/DE passed’ (SUPP) means that your readmission to UCT in the current academic year depends on the outcome of your supplementary/deferred examinations. You must appeal before your supplementary/deferred examination results are released at the end of January. If you do not appeal by the deadline and you later fail your supplementary or deferred examinations, you will not be allowed to submit a late appeal.
Each Faculty has a Readmission Appeal Committee (RAC). The RAC meets to consider appeals from students who have failed to meet the re-registration requirements but are appealing for readmission. Your appeal goes to ONE faculty RAC only. This need not be the faculty where you were registered in the previous academic year.
This is the process you must follow if you wish to appeal the Faculty Examination Committee’s decision to deny you re-registration in the current academic year:
Please note that the RAC is the only body that can hear your appeal and its decision will be final. No second or further appeal to a higher body is possible. As such, you must include all evidence of circumstances that would justify your readmission in your appeal. Such evidence would include, for example:
- medical/death certificates
- sworn affidavits
- travel itineraries and tickets.
If these are not available by 6 January the current academic year, submit the appeal and indicate in the checklist what is to follow.
The Readmission Appeal Process
Step 1: Read this information sheet carefully.
Step 2: Complete the correct appeal form (make sure that you have completed the checklist at the end of this information sheet). Please note that undergraduate and postgraduate students have separate forms. Do not use old forms.
Please make sure that before you submit your appeal that you make and keep a copy of your appeal form and any supporting documentation. University of Cape Town UCT Readmissions
Save your appeal form and all supporting documentation as a SINGLE PDF file.
Step 3: Upload your appeal on PeopleSoft Self Service using the RAC Service Request by the deadline date and time:
Monday 6 January the current academic year by 12h00
Your appeal form and supporting documents that has been saved as a SINGLE PDF file can only be submitted via PeoleSoft Self Service. Go to the Readmission Appeal Service Request upload for instructions on how to submit.
Step 4: The Student Records Office will send your appeal to the Faculty RAC to which you have appealed. Please do not include your UCT and matric results in your application.
Step 5: The RAC will consider your appeal.
Step 6: The RAC will write to you to inform you of their decision (for further information about this, please read the section titled ‘Appeal Results’).
Step 7: We strongly urge you to start making plans for what you will do in the current academic year if your appeal fails and you are denied readmission to UCT. Please do not wait until you know the outcome of your appeal to start planning for the current academic year as you may be too late to gain entrance into another institution.
Reasons for Appeal
As mentioned above, it is important that you provide as much context and supporting information as possible to get a full picture of why you struggled academically through the year. Supporting reasons may be, for example: accommodation problems, your financial position, any emotional problems you may have had, any ill health, or family difficulties.
When the RAC evaluates appeals, members of the committee read the full appeal and are guided in their considerations by three specific questions. These are set out below. You are advised to draft your appeal in a way that provides information to the RAC accordingly.
(a) Were there significant events or circumstances, probably mostly beyond the control of the student, which impacted adversely on the student’s academic performance and explain the poor academic performance and were these circumstances well beyond the events or circumstances which happen to most students from time to time?
(b) Is there evidence (letters, documents, etc.) to confirm the events or circumstances, and a clear description of how they affected the student, and does the timing of the events correlate with the poor performance?
(c) Is there evidence that the difficulties have been dealt with, or are being dealt with, or that there are plans in place, so that there is a good chance that the poor performance will not simply repeat itself this year.
In addition, the committee looks carefully at the academic record, to try to evaluate whether, despite your academic record, there may be evidence of progress in key courses which might indicate a potential to complete the degree.
If you intend appealing to a different faculty to where you were previously registered, you should refer to the relevant Faculty website and electronic Faculty handbooks: to find out what programmes they offer. If you choose to apply to a different Faculty, you must provide a motivation as to why you should be considered for entry into that Faculty.

- Is your appeal clearly written and does it include all relevant evidence to support the reason(s) for your poor performance? Remember that all information submitted to the RAC remains confidential, and withholding vital information will jeopardise your appeal.

Calculating Admissions Points Score (APS)
The percentages achieved in National Senior Certificate examinations (preliminary and final examinations) will be allocated an admission score equal to that percentage.
The sum of 6 subjects, excluding Life Orientation, but including English and any required subject(s) for the relevant programme, is considered when deciding on admission. For example, for a given programme where Maths and Physical Sciences are required, we will take scores for English, Maths, Physical Sciences and the next best 3 subjects other than Life Orientation to compute the NSC score towards the APS.
Results below 40% for any subject do not attract a score.

University of Cape Town UCT Accommodation 2021-2022
University of Cape Town UCT Accommodation – See details below:
Student housing
UCT provides different types of accommodation for undergraduate and postgraduate students, on and off campus.
Usually, you will start out in a first-tier residence (full catering), move on to a second-tier residence (senior catering or self-catering) and later, stay in third-tier accommodation (semi-autonomous self-catering).
Each residence has its own history and traditions, but they all try to provide a great experience. Safety is of great importance to UCT, so all residences have strict access control and most are covered by closed-circuit television cameras.
Students with disabilities can be accommodated in different residences. Simply contact the Student Accommodation Office and the Disability Service, and they will address your particular needs.
First-tier accommodation First-tier residences provide accommodation for undergraduate students, who are usually under the age of 21. These residences provide students with up to 3 meals a day in a dining hall. Some first-tier residence buildings have double rooms.
These residences have common-room space for television, meetings and social interaction, as well as self-operating laundries. Many have pool and table tennis facilities, and some have access to a swimming pool.
Second-tier accommodation Second-tier residences provide accommodation for senior undergraduate and postgraduate students. Catering residences provide up to 3 meals a day in a dining hall. Most second-tier accommodation is in the form of 2- to 4-bedroom flats. All rooms are single.
The residence governance structures allow for a smooth transition into independent senior student life while allowing you to share communal space with your peers.
These residences provide common-room space for television, meetings and social interaction, as well as self-operating laundries. Many have a piano, pool and table tennis facilities, and some have access to a swimming pool.
Third-tier accommodation Third-tier residences provide accommodation for senior postgraduate students.
These residences have wardens who oversee academic and social well-being. The wardens ensure that there is a good community life in the houses, flats and purpose-built residences, such as Obz Square.
Due to the geographical fragmentation of third-tier accommodation, a Residence Association works to create a quality residence life experience.
With basic furniture provided, most units are within walking distance of upper campus or close to Jammie Shuttle stops, and all allow easy access to shops and public transport.
Some third-tier residences provide self-operating laundries, and all residents have access to UCT sport facilities and swimming pools.
Accommodation for students with spouses and dependents
JP Duminy residence provides accommodation for students with spouses and dependents (but this is limited to students’ own children). It is situated in Main Road, Mowbray, and houses 42 students in flats that are within easy walking distance of upper campus, the Jammie Shuttle service and local retail outlets.

The opportunity to speak to someone face-to-face about the different academic programmes and what they involve is absolutely vital to making the best study choices.
All faculties and departments take part in this event, and activities include:

University of Cape Town UCT First Year Students
University of Cape Town UCT First Year Students – see details below:
First Year Experience First Year ExperienceWe believe that it is crucial that we support students throughout their first year. Yet, to achieve success, first years need to play an active role in their development, and access the support available. Many students are afraid to ask for help, seeing it as a sign of weakness, but we believe that it is a natural part of the first-year experience. UCT’s First Year Experience (FYE) is not a service or a centre; rather, it is a shared value system that prioritises the all-round wellbeing of first years. It’s a collective effort that aims to give first-year students a sense of belonging, helps them adapt to the university, and offers academic and emotional support. We’d like students to see the entire first year as an opportunity to develop the skills they will need throughout their time at university. These values underpin the following programmes.
Help during Orientation First Year Experience
FYE is firmly aligned with the Orientation programme, spearheading the help desk and ‘tech buddy’ service. The help desk initiative sees UCT Orientation Leaders staffing temporary help desks at various points on campus. These senior students are there to help with queries on services and directions, and will refer students to the relevant support service.
The help desks will be active during Orientation, and during the first week of term, to help first-year students find their way on campus. Our tech buddies provide digital literacy assistance in undergraduate labs. These senior students ‘roam’ the labs offering ‘on-the-spot’ help with our online learning platform VULA, our online admin system, PeopleSoft, student email accounts, and using Microsoft Word.
Early Assessment
Early Assessment (EA) allows faculties to monitor students’ academic progress. EA is based on the grades students receive from mid-semester tests and assignments. It acts as a prompt for first-year students to engage with their faculty before their final marks for a particular programme. EA signals whether students should visit the student advisors in their faculty. These advisors will then offer tailored support through consultation, and they will advise students about the specific support services needed.
FYE Talks and Workshops
In line with our ethos of proactive support we encourage first years to attend workshops that provide both academic and non-academic support. The workshops cover topics including writing skills, stress and financial management, and exam preparation, amongst others. Once registered, students will be able to refer to the online learning system, Vula, for more information about these workshops, and to access further electronic resources.
University of Cape Town UCT Orientation Leadership Training
Orientation leadership training is aimed at current students who are interested in playing a leadership role during Orientation.
The programme is designed to equip students with skills in leadership, teamwork, problem-identification, and problem-solving around the process of Orientation. A variety of issues are covered including:
- The spirit of Orientation
- UCT’s diverse social community
- Adjustment to university life
- Basic mentoring skills
- Career development
The aim of the training is to become a professional Orientation leader (OL) with excellent communication skills.
Competition to become an orientation leader is quite stiff as only the best trainees are selected. The criteria for selection include attendance and participation in all the training sessions, enthusiasm, responsibility, initiative and a good academic record at the end of the year. There will also be opportunities for orientation leaders from one faculty to work with OLs from other faculties during Parents’ Orientation, Schools Open Day, and in the Student Orientation and Advocacy Service (SOAS).
